Historical Background

San Francisco Lovely peninsula with 43 rolling hills. It has the Bay on one side and the Pacific on the other. For many years it was the largest military port on the West Coast. It's eclectic culture grew with every new immigrant. They came searching for opportunity and found a place to belong. There is no majority. There is no minority. There's just a lot of different people. San Francisco's charm comes not only from its geographic location, but also from its unique shape and size, 10 kilometers by 10 kilometers, a patchwork of inviting neighborhood after inviting neighborhoodThe city has pretty much everything you can ask for. Fertile land, breathtaking natural beauty, the ocean, the beaches, and the perfect climate. These streets have seen the birth of North America's most influential cultural movements Beat Generation, Hippie culture and Gay Rights.

Bay Area, Napa Valley and Silicon Valley Silicon Valley

San Francisco's creative vitality radiates beyond the city itself and into the Bay Area. The nearby Napa Valley consistently produces some of the world's best wines, while Silicon Valley creates the technological innovations that constantly change the way we Live Today. San Francisco seeks out the perfect balance between living sustainably and living all out.

Village Life and Cosmopolitan Sophistication

This was a big harbor, a big court for soldiers being shipped off to war during the Second World War. It's that combination of village life and cosmopolitan sophistication that makes it so attractive. Macondray Lane an iconic street, and an inspiration for moping stories. In fact, this is where the television adaptation of Tales of the City was filmed. San Francisco is one of America's most important cities. It has the feel of a village, no Walmarts in the territory of San Francisco. You cannot get a chain yogurt store down here in North Beach. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has issued a ban on businesses that have more than 11 outlets nationally. The streets are not covered with brand names and franchises. Commercial space is reserved for smaller boutiques and restaurants that reflect the character of the city. Only the large chains that settled here prior to 2003 are allowed to stay, but for how long?

The 300 Staircases of San Francisco

San Francisco streets are full of surprises. Just look at the countless neighborhoods pressed tightly together, but completely different from one another. And these tiny houses are the soul of the city, warm and inviting. To connect the neighborhoods that define the city, or to keep that slim figure you've been working on, you can always use one of the 300 staircases, one of which is invariably hidden around the next corner. All this is very cute, but before the cars could navigate the city, some of these steep hills were too much for horses.

The Trams

The trams are more than 135 years old and they're the last in the world to operate full time. Their mechanism is surprisingly simple. The wagons are pulled by cables that run just under the street. The driver uses his brakes and clamps to determine the speed.

Diversity

According to the locals, San Francisco is limitless. love, magical, multicultural, equality, friendly, open, opportunity, family, peace, diversity. People realize how special it isOne reason is a lot of people are not from here, they come from somewhere else, and they come here most of the time for something better. It seems like a collective agreement here to make things better. Definitely, maybe it is the tradition of the 60s or tradition of post war. It keeps building upon itself. It's what draws people here. Something that is very San Francisco Is the idea of community, the idea that that community is really important and that things that really matter, are things that are going to matter to community. San Francisco is pretty good in terms of things like public transportation, bike lanes and could be a lot better. There are people who have the vision to make it better, but they get pushback. You know, they're still developers who want to build lots of parking lots in San Francisco. So, it's like any place. People say it's magical, but it's not fantasy.

San Francisco, since it is right on the water, there is quality of the air Like the saying goes, birds of a feather flock together. That was probably invented here, because in San Francisco, everyone's moving towards the same goal: Well-being.

San Francisco's diversity is also apparent in its cultural mix, 45% Caucasian, 14% Latino and almost 31% Asian. It's home to America's second largest Chinatown after New York. There is no majority, there is no minority People did come to San Francisco from all corners of the world. Spanish were the first to settle here and the link to California Hispanic heritage is very present in daily life. With the second highest population density of any city in America, green spaces are hard to come by in San Francisco. But Taco trucks are not. There's even a website, californiatacotrucks.com, that helps track the real time location of Taco trucks, prowling the city streets. Tacos are great, but they're not the only culinary trend taking over the city.

Edible Schoolyard

Make way for the Edible Schoolyard. Almost 40 local family farmers grow and send their entire production to the restaurant. They make healthy, simple lunches for the Edible Schoolyard The Edible Schoolyard Program is being put into action across the country. With the current obesity epidemic, we hear so much about, it's likely projects like this will catch on. Edible schoolyards already exist in Louisiana, North Carolina and Brooklyn.

Alcatraz Island

Straight ahead in the heart of the day, the legendary Alcatraz Island, home to the very definition of imprisonment, is the ultimate paradox in a city so free. Before becoming a tourist attraction, it was a military fortress. Then a military jail and finally a high security federal prison, until 1963. It's most famous prisoner was, you guessed it, Al Capone. And contrary to popular belief, no one has ever really escaped from Alcatraz.

Alcatraz, San Francisco

Ocean Beach is 8 kilometers in length and covers most of the west side of the peninsula It's a beautiful place. San Franciscans place a high value on the quality of life.

San Francisco Academy of Sciences

At San Francisco Academy of Sciences for a surprising look at a unique project. There are 1.7 million plants, all native California, all sorts of meticulously researched to see what species would work and what wouldn't. They help to restore butterfly habitats; they help with temperature control to help insulate the building. The whole idea of San Francisco being a sustainable city is one that is gaining prominence. There’s a website called walkscore.com where you can type in your address, and it will gauge how walkable your neighborhood is.

Recycling, composting and bringing your own bags to the grocery store are nothing new here. If you really want to be green and sustainable in this city, you'll have to do more than that.

Cyclists and the 43 Hills

The 43 Hills. They can get in your way, but the eager cyclists here don't let any of them slow them down. To help their travels, they have a secret tool that shows the less difficult routes to make their way from one neighborhood to the next. They have maps that show all the hills and the bike paths that make it easier to bike in the city. People love being outside, they love biking, they hate being in a car, and it'll get you everywhere faster.

The Center of Technological Revolution

San Francisco. Green city. Hip city. Sustainable city. Hard to believe it's been the center of the technological revolution. Wikipedia, Twitter. Craigslist, Yelp, Flickr, Blogger. Dig, all based in San Francisco. These social media leaders all reflect the local importance of community, and this is without taking into account the Internet companies that have evolved around the San Francisco area. Maybe you've heard of them. Apple, Yahoo, Google and YouTube.

Using the Internet to let the world know what you had for breakfast may not be that important. But the impact of the technology invented here is beyond anything we could have imagined.
